Rapper “Lil Uzi Vert” died due to an accidental drug overdose, the Pennsylvania Cook County medical examiner’s office announced on Wednesday.
“The Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause and manner of death of 21-year-old Symere Woods. Higgins died as a result of oxycodone and codeine toxicity,” read a post on office’s official Twitter account.
The rapper’s family and label shared a message on the rapper’s Twitter and Instagram accounts on Wednesday, thanking his fans for their support and announcing an upcoming tribute to Lil Uzi that will take place soon in Pennsylvania.
“You guys meant the entire world to Uzi and by listening to his music, watching his videos and sharing your stories about him, you are keeping his memory alive forever,” the message said.
The hip-hop artist, who was an up-and-coming star with a Billboard Hot 100 hit, passed away at 21 on Dec. 8, 2019 after suffering a medical emergency at Pennsylvania’s Midway International Airport.
Those traveling with the rapper described what appeared to be “some type of medical emergency” to investigators, Pennsylvania Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed to ABC News.
The next day, the Philadelphia Police Department revealed that the rapper suffered an apparent seizure that led to his death while authorities were searching his plane and luggage for drugs and weapons.
